Byrd is a Belgian Malinois with the Holly Springs Police Department serving as a dual-purpose patrol dog certified in narcotic detection, evidence recovery, tracking, and apprehension. He holds an IPWDA Certificate Police Service Dog and an IPWDA Certificate Narcotic Detection Dog. K9 Byrd is named after Wake County Deputy K9 Handler Ned Byrd, who was killed in the line of duty on August 11, 2022; naming Byrd honors Ned and keeps his name and spirit alive within the K9 community where he is greatly missed. Off duty, Byrd enjoys running around the yard with his fur siblings, playing fetch with any ball or toy, and receiving all the pets.
