Baxter, a 2-year-old German Shepherd with the Smithfield Police Department in Smithfield, Rhode Island, has been a police dog for 10 weeks; he is certified in narcotic detection through the North American Police Work Dog Association and is currently in patrol school. At home he enjoys playing with his handler’s Belgian Malinois, Val, and with Kong toys and balls, spending time with his handler’s two children, ages 4 and 3, and going for rides to the local coffee shop.
